The New Orleans Pelicans just announced that rookie Zion Williamson underwent surgery today on a torn right lateral meniscus and will miss six to eight weeks, making Ja Morant of the Memphis the new betting favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award this season. Now we have no choice but to wait for Wiliamson's NBA debut for around. Per Shams Charania, NBA Insider/Writer/Analyst for The Athletic and Stadium: "Pelicans rookie star Zion Williamson underwent arthroscopic surgery for torn meniscus in the right knee and will be out 6-to-8 weeks." With Williamson out for an extended period of time, talented point guard Ja Morant is now favored to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. The Grizzlies took Morant No. 2 overall in the NBA Draft to make him the face of the franchise along with Jaren Jackson Jr. Morant was a consensus first-time All-American with Murray State after dominating the Ohio Valley Conference as a sophomore last season. He averaged 24.5 points, 10.0 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals while shooting 49.9 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from beyond the arc in 36.6 minutes over 33 games. Murray State, ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Tournament, upset No. 5 Marquette before losing to Florida State in the second round and Ja Morant was the main reason why they went so far. Morant is a potential superstar he's a natural scorer, athlete and playmaker who will help the Grizzlies shoulder a huge portion of the scoring load right away. He is the kind of player that thrives when he has the ball in his hands and he has been compared to a more athletic D'Angelo Russell or Russell Westbrook.
