In a year where we don’t even know if we’re going to have a champion and when the draft is going to be held, free agency is still a vital topic. There is likely to be less major turnover this offseason than last, where we had a lot of star movement through LA and Brooklyn. But still, it will provide plenty of drama, head-scratchers, and title-winning moves. Let’s look at some of the top guys that will be available this summer. It seems like just yesterday that AD signed his 5-year $140 million deal with the Pelicans, but here we are. He technically has one year left, but he is likely to opt out so he can make a whole lot more. His previous contract was considered significant money at the time, but now it’s laughable for him as he has out-played it in this market. There are really only two destinations for him. The Lakers are the most likely, as he’d re-sign and try and help bring LeBron a ring in Hollywood. He does have one other option on the table. He grew up in Chicago, so a return home can never be ruled out until his decision is official. It is not likely, but if they could land him, they’ll move up big-time in the East. It is truly impressive just how good BI was during his first year in New Orleans. Away from the big lights of LA, he was an All-Star and a fantasy snatch for many people in their drafts. He was able to prove himself as an elite scorer and playmaker from day one. And it does not seem that he is going to go anywhere. The only issue for New Orleans is that they are not in control of the price tag. Ingram can take other meetings and can be enticed by huge money elsewhere. Pelicans have the final say on the matter as he is restricted. He has Lonzo and Zion here to team up with, with some savvy veterans. It is no secret that he is unhappy in San Antonio, and it’s hard not to blame him. DeMar spent nine years in Toronto, most of them with his best friend Kyle Lowry. The two of them still maintain that relationship, but it’s obviously different than before. DeRozan’s mental health has been a topic of conversation, something he has proudly come forward about. It’s got to be hard being on a non-competitive Spurs team after all the years of contending in Toronto. He’ll likely opt out and head elsewhere this summer. And though he isn’t as-talked about this year, he is still playing great ball. He’ll help a team get over the hump. The first natural free agent here by way of expiring contract, Gallo is going to get paid. Injuries took a toll on his play in Denver and his first year in LA, but he’s been very good the past two seasons. He can score from anywhere and is a solid wing defender. He’s helped OKC and he’ll help someone else next year. Unless Sam Presti wants him around, which would be hard to blame him for. Fred is going to make the big bucks this summer, deservedly. He went undrafted and had a few solid years in Toronto. They gave him a 2-year, $18 million deal. And after following up his magical playoff performances last year with a stellar regular season this year, he is in line for a major payday. One that should keep the former Wichita State Shocker in Toronto for the years to come. VanVleet is a force on both ends of the floor, and it’ll be fun to see him as a Raptor for the years to come. Unless someone swoops in.
