Ohio might have played the most exciting game of the opening week but it was a disappointing home loss to Texas State in overtime. Obviously it doesn’t hurt them in the MAC standings but they were a heavy favourite and have a lot to correct if they want to avoid an 0-2 start. Plus losing to Kansas is going to sting.
Kansas broke its losing streak by beating Rhode Island in its opener. The fact that it is news when a B12 team beats Rhode Island tells you everything you need to know about the state of the program. Coming off an 0-12 season they will take what they can get in Lawrence. If you are into line history KU was not a favourite in any game last year but this will be the second week in a row they are.
Ohio scored 54 points including overtime last week but it still wasn’t enough. It is especially disappointing because QB Greg Windham could not have been much better with 380 yards, 4TDs and no picks. They even rolled up 250 yards on the ground in the thriller but they simply had no answers on defense.
Kansas might not be as good an offensive team as Texas State though. Ohio can’t be as bad on defense as they showed or perhaps they were taking Texas State too lightly. Either way it was a sloppy performance that I am sure produced a teachable moment for coach Frank Solich.
A win is a win is a win so the Jayhawks can enter the second week of the season with some confidence. They rolled up 55 points on URI and QB Montell Cozart had a strong day – they have no chance when he doesn’t play well. I am sure the coach is working hard at keeping this from going to their head but some players on that team have never been a part of a win before.
Kansas should invest their enthusiasm from last week into this one because once B12 play starts they are not likely to be in many games. You have to consider the opponent but they were especially stingy against the pass last week – just 6 completions allowed. The run defense was not nearly as firm – 170 yards is something the Bobcats to match or exceed.
In addition to limiting their opponent they also have to clean up a performance that saw them commit 13 penalties for 141 yards. That is almost unheard of.
If ever there was going to be a situation where Kansas might be overvalued this could be it. They won and are at home playing a team that lost from an inferior conference and they are still just -3. Is that overvalue or is it a slap in the face. Ohio should be undervalued this week
Good Luck on this one folks! Ray Monohan.
