One of the all-time greats returns to take on Keith Thurman Saturday, July 20th. The fight is for WBA supremacy In the Welterweight division and claim glory in one of the deepest divisions in boxing. Pacquiao is undoubtedly one of the greatest of all time. He has proved experts wrong time and time again and continues to just shock the world. Every time he has hit a bump in the round, his mental toughness always prevails, and he comes right back. This time around though, Pacquiao is faced with a serious killer in Keith Thurman. Thurman is currently undefeated and his 29-0. He also finishes his fights over 70% of the time. Manny Pacquiao is coming off a rather dominant win over Adrian Broner, where he picked up a unanimous decision victory. Thurman is coming off of a majority decision over Joseito Lopez, but also defeated Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter before that. Pacquiao- (+130) Thurman (-150) To my surprise, Pacquiao is the slight underdog. I’m not shocked the fight is close on paper, but I figured the Vegas odds would go in the favor of Pacquiao, due to his status alone. You simply cannot count Manny Pacquiao in any fight. He is so technically sound; you can easily envision a path to victory for the Philippines native. Thurman brings quite a bit of power and athleticism to the fight that will give any Welterweight issues. Also, he is the bigger fighter as well. Pacquiao stands at 5’5, while Thurman is 5’7. Thurman also has a 69” reach, which will be a 2-inch advantage over Pacquiao, who has a 67” reach. Pacquiao is no strange to being the smaller fighter though, so I don’t know if it will be that much of a factor come the night of the fight. Both men have a good chance of claiming victory on July 20th. At the ripe age of 40, Pacquiao is now in a fight against father time in his career. However, considering his last performance, I don’t think it was that much of a factor. He has had a great ability to remain healthy and has over 60 professional wins to his name. I think his experience will play a large factor into how this fight plays out. For Thurman, he is only 30 years old, but has had some difficulties with injuries recently that may have hindered him a bit. It could lead to him being overwhelmed by Pacquiao if he isn’t able to find his rhythm early on. Thurman is really being overlooked I think due to his injury stint. I do agree that if he isn’t able to become the dominant fighter in the ring within 4 rounds, he’ll be in trouble. However, this is Thurman’s big chance to be set in stone as one of the best at 147 and continue on undefeated. For Pacquiao, a win here is huge for his legacy and just further cements him as one of the best to ever do it, and I think he has a great chance to do so. Overall, I predict that Pacquaio will be a bad matchup for the undefeated Thurman. I think Pacquaio will utilize his speed and accuracy to slow down the Explosive Thurman within 4 rounds. From there, he’ll pick his shots and earn a rather dominant unanimous decision over Thurman, further pushing him into the conversation of one of the best to ever do it.
