The national title hopes of the Wisconsin Badgers are gone after last week’s unbelievable loss at Michigan State on an overturned instant replay Hail Mary touchdown for the Spartans, but the Badgers still control their own destiny to reach the first Big Ten Championship Game heading into tonight’s home game against Ohio State. UW opened as a 7.5-point favorite on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

Coach Bret Bielema says he thinks his Badgers (6-1, 2-1, No. 15 in BCS standings) will bounce back. And QB Russell Wilson said he was bolstered by the fact the Badgers rallied to tie the game at 31 prior to the 44-yard touchdown catch as time expired that sealed the Spartans’ victory. Wisconsin definitely needs to work on special teams as the Spartans blocked two kicks, one a punt that was returned for a touchdown. And Wilson looked mortal, throwing two interceptions, although the Badgers did put up 443 total yards on one of the nation’s top defenses. The loss ended UW’s nine-game Big Ten winning streak.

Ohio State (4-3, 1-2), despite all the suspensions clouds around the program involving the ongoing NCAA investigation, still has a shot to win the Big Ten title yet again. But certainly OSU must win out to reach the conference title game. The Buckeyes had two weeks to prepare for this one, as they last played Oct. 15, a 17-7 shutdown of Illinois. Amazingly, OSU won with one pass completion for 17 yards, although it was for a fourth-quarter touchdown. RB Dan Herron carried the ball 23 times for 114 yards and the third-quarter score that was the game winner. Ohio State ranks 12th nationally in fewest points allowed at 16.2 ppg.

Ohio State says it has won the last three official meetings between the schools, but that’s only because OSU vacated the entire 2010 season. Last year in Madison, Wisconsin won 31-18, handing the then-No. 1 Buckeyes their only official loss of the season. It was the Badgers’ first win over a No. 1-ranked team since 1981.
