The No. 8 Virginia Tech Hokies can’t officially clinch a spot in the ACC Championship Game opposite Clemson with a home win over North Carolina on Thursday night, but Virginia Tech could officially earn that spot if Virginia, as expected, loses on Saturday at Florida State. The Hokies opened as 11-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds and live betting is available for the ESPN telecast.

Virginia Tech (9-1, 5-1 ACC) truly put itself in the driver’s seat in the Coastal Division with last Thursday’s 37-26 win at Georgia Tech, the Hokies’ fifth win in a row since their lone loss of the season, to Clemson. QB Logan Thomas accounted for five touchdowns for the second time this season and RB David Wilson, who might be the ACC Player of the Year, had his seventh straight 100-yard game with a career-high 175 yards on 23 carries. Virginia Tech leads Virginia by a game in the Coastal and the two teams close the regular season against each other. So if Virginia Tech loses this week regardless of what Virginia does, then next Saturday’s game will be for the Coastal Division.

North Carolina (6-4, 2-4) has been struggling, losing three of four. The Heels have been off since Nov. 5 when they were beaten 13-0 by rival NC State. UNC was held to a total of 3 yards rushing, although freshman RB Giovani Bernard became the first North Carolina player since 1997 to reach 1,000 yards rushing in a season. Heels starting QB Bryn Renner was knocked out of that game with a concussion but he has recovered and will start this one. Renner leads the ACC and is No. 8 nationally in passing efficiency. He has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,271 yards and 19 touchdowns (four shy of tying school record) with 11 interceptions.

Virginia Tech leads this series 6-1 since joining the ACC, but the last time the teams played in Blacksburg, which was also on a Thursday night, UNC pulled off a 20-17 upset in 2009. Hokies are 0-4 ATS in their past four games. Road team has covered in past five meetings in this series.
