Neither Texas Tech nor Texas is going to win the Big 12 title this season,
but both can become officially bowl eligible with a victory in Saturday’s game
in Austin. The Longhorns opened as 12-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football
odds. Texas Tech (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) has been maddening this season. The Red Raiders
started October with close losses to ranked teams Texas A&M and Kansas
State, both games TTU could have won. Then Texas Tech pulled the nation’s
biggest surprise of the season, beating No. 3 Oklahoma 41-38 on Oct. 22 as
29-point underdogs. That ended the nation’s longest home winning streak at
39. So how did TTU respond last week as 14-point favorites at home against a bad
Iowa State team? ISU clobbered the Red Raiders 41-7. TTU QB Seth Doege
completed 16 of 32 passes for a season-low 171 yards, threw two
interceptions and lost a fumble. Texas Tech had a streak of 69 games, dating
2006, with a touchdown pass snapped. Clearly Texas Tech had a major emotional
letdown after the Oklahoma upset. No. 25 Texas (5-2, 2-2) ended a two-game slide with a 43-0 cakewalk over
horrid Kansas last week. Texas rushed for 441 yards as a team against the worst
defense in the country. Texas held Kansas to 46 yards of total offense, setting
the record for the best defensive performance during Mack Brown's
tenure in Austin. It does appear that David Ash has supplanted Case
McCoy as UT’s starting QB. He played the entire game the week before
against Oklahoma State and was in against Kansas until late in the third quarter
with Texas holding a 33-0 lead; Ash was an efficient 14 of 18 passing for 145
yards and also ran for a score. Then former starter McCoy got some mop-up duty.
Technically Ash and McCoy are still listed as co-starters, but Ash is expected
to get the call again. The Longhorns have won two straight against the Red Raiders and lead the
all-time series 44-15. UT has won six in a row in Austin vs. the Red Raiders.
Texas is 5-1 ATS in its past six overall as a favorite. TTU is 3-7 ATS in past
10 as a road dog. Bet on college football at Bodog: HOME OF INTENSE COLLEGE
