The University of North Carolina football team was expected to
implode this season after head coach Butch Davis was fired just before fall camp
began. Yet here the Heels are at 2-0 as they host fellow 2-0 club Virginia in
the ACC opener for both teams. UNC opened as a 10-point favorite on Bodog’s NCAA football odds. North Carolina beat Rutgers 24-22 last weekend. Freshman Giovani
Bernard scored on runs of 60 and 6 yards for the Tar Heels, who
overcame five turnovers to begin the season with consecutive wins for the third
time in the last four seasons. Bryn Renner was 20 of 26 for 273
yards and a touchdown for North Carolina, but did throw three picks. The Heels
lead the ACC and are third in the country in rushing defense (30.0 per game)
after limiting Rutgers to just 1 yard on the ground. The win over Rutgers was
the first time UNC had won a game while committing five turnovers since 1995 vs.
Louisville. Virginia hasn’t exactly played tough competition so far, routing James
Madison in its opener and then squeaking by Big Ten bottomfeeder Indiana 34-31
last week. Defensive end Cam Johnson forced an IU fumble with
1:13 left in the game, setting up a 23-yard field goal for the win. The Cavs
were up 23-3 early in the third quarter before falling behind 31-23. The Cavaliers have won two straight in Kenan Stadium and seven of the last
nine overall in the series. Carolina ended a 14-game road losing streak to
Virginia with a 44-10 rout in Charlottesville last year. UNC hasn’t beaten
Virginia in back to back years since 1981-82. Get the best NCAA football odds and props at the Web’s gaming leader
