Can you fire a coach who leads his team to a conference championship game?
That might be a question officials at UCLA may have to answer as Bruins coach
Rick Neuheisel is considered squarely on the hot seat despite
the fact that UCLA will play in the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game with a
victory Saturday night at crosstown rival USC. However, the Trojans opened as
14.5-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.
UCLA (6-5, 5-3 Pac-12) has won three of its
past four games and played probably its best game of the season last week, a
45-6 blowout of a lousy Colorado team. QB Kevin Prince had
arguably the best all-around game of his career at UCLA. He completed 15 of 19
passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 84 yards in 16 carries.
His completion percentage of 78.9 percent was a career high and he had never
thrown more than two touchdowns in a game. The Bruins rushed for a season-best
328 yards and posted their largest margin of victory since 2005. If UCLA wins
here, they are the South Division champions and likely would meet Oregon in the
Pac-12 title game.
No. 10 USC (9-2, 6-2) would win the division with a
victory but is ineligible for postseason play. The Trojans are playing
terrifically right now, having just won at Oregon 38-35 last week. QB
Matt Barkley might be a Heisman finalist now. He had a
323-yard, four-touchdown performance in the upset of the Ducks, ending their
21-game home winning streak, two weeks after a record-setting six-touchdown game
in a 42-17 blowout at Colorado. Barkley needs five TD passes in this game to tie
Matt Leinart’s career school record of 38; it’s presumed
Barkley will head to the NFL after this season.
UCLA has lost 11 of the
last 12 games to USC, including the last three under Neuheisel. Last year it was
28-14 Trojans although Barkley struggled, going 15-for-26 for 198 yards with a
TD and two picks. The Bruins turned the ball over three times. UCLA has covered
just once in past seven visits to USC and is 1-8 ATS in its past nine road games
overall.
