Can you fire a coach if he gets your school into a conference championship
game? Rick Neuheisel is squarely on the hot seat at UCLA, but
the Bruins still are very much in the race in the weak Pac-12 South Division.
However, a loss tonight at a reeling Arizona squad likely will seal Neuheisel’s
fate. And the Wildcats are 4-point favorites on Bodog. With a victory, the Bruins (3-3, 2-1 Pac-12) would tie Arizona State and USC for first place in the South Division and be in a good position to play in the league's inaugural title game. As things stand now, UCLA doesn’t face another ranked team this season, although both Arizona State and USC could be when they meet (the Trojans are ineligible to play in the postseason). UCLA will have a new starting quarterback, although he’s not new.
Kevin Prince has the job back after Richard Brehaut, who had
supplanted Prince, broke his leg in UCLA’s last game, a 28-25 win over
Washington State on Oct. 8. Prince was 8-for-13 for 173 yards and two scores in
that one, including the game-winning TD pass with a little over three minutes
left as UCLA rallied from eight down in the fourth quarter. Arizona (1-5, 0-4), meanwhile, has lost an astounding 10 straight games to
FBS opponents. The Cats’ last win against an FBS team? A 29-21 victory at UCLA
last Oct. 30. Arizona’s last game was a 37-27 loss at then-winless Oregon State
on Oct. 8 and that defeat cost coach Mike Stoops his job after
nearly eight seasons. Defensive coordinator Tim Kish will be
the interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Wildcats can score behind QB Nick Foles, who is second
in the nation in passing yards per game. He is on pace to set numerous school
records this season and has had only one game with less than 378 yards passing
this season. And he has a stellar target in Juron Criner,
although he has had a disappointing season (UCLA is No. 76 against the pass).
But Arizona is among the nation’s worst rushing teams and its defense might be
the worst of any BCS conference school. Both teams will be without a key member of their secondary tonight with UCLA
safety Tony Dye and Arizona safety Adam Hall
both out. Arizona has defeated UCLA in their last four meetings and UCLA hasn't won in
Tucson since 2006. Foles missed last year’s Arizona win with an injury. Experience the rush of college football: get your NCAA football odds at Bodog!
