Three Things We Learned On Saturday

1. Score one for the BCS
Not that I like or condone the BCS system in any way, but in reality, how big of an impact would these losses be if we had, say an 8 team playoff? Florida, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Rutgers, Texas, Oregon, Clemson, Penn St and Alabama all lost this week. Each team has a difficult enough schedule, where, if they were to win out, they could climb back into the national title race. Now, none have a shot except maybe Florida or Oklahoma. So, I’ll chalk this week up to the BCS and college football in general, because each week is its own lesser playoff saying, “Hey, if you win twelve games in a row; you’ll be playing for all the marbles.”

2. LSU, USC and maybe Cal are in a league of their own
LSU was guilty of the “look-ahead” syndrome that seemed to plague most of the top 15 on Saturday. Thank goodness their opponent was inferior Tulane and not a decent team. USC can notch another road win on their belt after taking care of business in Seattle. I don’t care who you play, winning intra-conference road games in college football is one of the hardest things to do. And Cal throws up 21 in the 4th quarter and beats highly-touted Oregon on the road; very impressive. I really hope the Golden Bears will be 9-0 when the mighty Trojans come a’ knocking on November 10.

3. No lead is safe
I tried to come up with a better cliché, but best to keep it simple. Oklahoma, Oregon, Rutgers in the top 25 all blew second half leads. Memphis, SMU, Oregon St and La Tech, just to name a few, all blew leads in their respective games. A piece of advice to all the coaches out there; RUN UP THE SCORE. I don’t care if you’re coaching against your best friend, worst enemy or your kidney donor. This is college football and anything can and most likely will happen.
