The Red River Rivalry By John Ryan Texas will host No. 1 Oklahoma and are installed as 11 point dogs this Saturday. Seems the public is all over the Sooners and initially, who could argue with them betting on the No. 1 team in the land. However, this series has had plenty of upsets and this marks only the 12th time in the past 40 years and only the second since 2004 where both teams are undefeated. Here is the breakdown. In 197, No. 8 Oklahoma defeated No. 3 Texas 48-27. In 1972, No. 2 Oklahoma defeated No. 10 Texas 27-0. In 1975, No. 2 Oklahoma defeated No. 5 Texas 24-17. In 1977, No. 5 Texas defeated No. 2 Oklahoma 13-6. In 1978 No.1 Oklahoma defeated No.6 Texas 31-10. In 1979, No. 4 Texas defeated No. 3 Oklahoma 16-7. In 1984, No1. Texas and No. 3 Oklahoma played to a 15-15 tie. In 1985, No. 2 Oklahoma defeated No. 17 Texas 14-7. It was then a big drought until 2001 when these two teams met undefeated with No. 3 Oklahoma defeating No. 5 Texas 14-3 and were three point dogs. Th game played ‘under’ the 56 point total easily. In 2002 No. 2 Oklahoma defeated No. 3 Texas 35-24 as a three point dog and the game played ‘over’ the 45 1/2 point total. In 2004, No. 2 Oklahoma defeated No. 4 Texas 12-0 with the Sooners covering as 7 12 point favorites and the game played ‘under’ the 54 point total. Lastly, in 2008, No. 5 Texas defeated No. 1 Oklahoma 45-35 as seven point dogs. The game played ‘over’ the 56 12/ point total. The majority of these games resulted in easy ATS wins when picking the correct side. Totals seem to play ‘under’ when the game is expected to be a old fashion shootout and then play ‘over’ when the game is thought to be a defensive matchup. That’s just one of the reasons why this Red River Rivalry is one of the best ever.
