That’s right folks; the Kansas Jayhawks sit atop of the overall Big 12 Standings at 9-0 and ranked 4th in the nation. No, this is not basketball we are talking about, it is football. The Jayhawks just hung a basketball score on my beloved Huskers this past weekend scoring 76 points against the blackshirts (or pink shirts), in a serious ass whipping of the hated Huskers, once the Goliath of the Big 8 and Big 12 conference. Kansas is the only undefeated team in the Big 12, and in conference action as well, followed by Missouri and Oklahoma at 8-1 overall and 4-1 in conference action.
The showdown in a sold out Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City November 24th looms large for both Missouri and Kansas, in a heated border war that few in the nation realize just how deep and intense it runs. Both teams have some obstacles before they get there.
Missouri has a limping Texas AM this weekend, and then a game at K-State who always gives them a game. Kansas has a tough one on the road at Okie State who BLEW a game against Texas last week, and then whipping boy Iowa State before the big tilt. Who loses first before the big top 5 showdown in Kansas City? I say neither one of them. Oklahoma will await the winner for the Big 12 Championship in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio in early December. Oklahoma is playing some of the best football in the nation, and in my estimation will win against either team, having already beat Missouri soundly in Norman this year. Interesting that KU head coach Mark Magino used to be Bob Stoops offensive coordinator before taking the KU job, and they are good friends.
Let’s take a look at a few key games this weekend and some predictions:
Kansas State @ Nebraska +7
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Amidst rumors of Bill Callahan’s dismissal, Nebraska defense is simply horrible and I have now tabbed them the “Pink Shirts” versus the once vaunted blackshirt defense. With no pass rush and QB Freeman’s ability to move the pocket and make plays, Nebraska looks at 6 straight defeats in a row and no bowl game for only the second time in 38 years, both under Callahan’s regime. NU is 1-8 ATS their last 9 games and with back-up QB Ganz sputtering against Kansas, and the Husker defense getting 76 points hung on them, they are an underdog to Kansas State in Lincoln for the first time that I can remember in my 40 years of being a once proud Husker. Kansas State licking their chops to get a rare win in Lincoln. Kansas State 35 Nebraska 20
Colorado @ Iowa State+5
Doubt the Buffs recover quickly off a 55-10 pasting at home by the hands of Missouri last week. Iowa State has actually played some good football down the stretch and beat a decent Kansas State team last week in convincing fashion. Colorado has some defensive injuries and after last weeks performance should not be laying this type of number. ISU getting sneaky good and remember they gave Texas all they wanted in Ames. Iowa State by 3.
Baylor @ Oklahoma -38
Whew, I sniff a massive blowout here. Baylor giving up points in bunches and scoring just 18 ppg this season. Scary thought now that Bob Stoops is starting to acquire BCS points for the Sooners as the season winds down. Oklahoma has gotten nothing but stronger since the loss at Boulder, and QB Bradford has 25 TD passes to only 5 picks and 2100 yards so far this season. Baylor has no chance here. OU by 45
