TCU returns 16 starters this season and will be looking to improve on last season's 4-8 record. TCU only averaged 25 ppg as they had quarterback issues and struggled to find a consistent running game. I will remind you that before TCU moved to the BIG 12, they averaged 41.5 ppg their last 2 seasons in the Mountain West Conference (2010 -2011). TCU is ranked 2nd in the BIG 12 this season in terms of total experience. They return 72% of their lettermen and return 78% of their tacklers from last year. An encouraging sign for TCU is that although they only won 4 games last year, they still went 7-5 'ITS'. They lost 4 games by 3 points or less and their bad fortunes from last season should transform into better luck this year. To help fix the offense, TCU will bring in TWO offensive coordinators, a former OC from Oklahoma State, and Sonny Cumbie who comes from Texas Tech. Needless to say, these two guys know how to run an offense in the BIG 12 and I look for immediate improvement. The Quarterback position is up for grabs but I expect Texas AM transfer, Matt Joekel, to win the job. Joekel is an experienced quarterback that can run the Air-Raid/Spread offense. He played behind 'Johnny Football' for two years and I have to think that he learned a thing or two. After graduating from Texas AM, Joekel has decided to come play for Gary Patterson at TCU and will be looking to carry the Horned Frogs to a bowl this season. Trevone Boykin played quarterback last season, but he is more of an athlete that should be used as a wide receiver and as a kick/punt returner. They can also line Boykin up in the backfield as a running back and add some trick/variation plays in as well. TCU returns their Top 2 running backs, and return 5 of their top 6 receiver's from 2013. I like the height they have out on the outside with two guys that are 6'4" and can be a potential mismatch. The offensive line was a mess last season and now they return 57 starts and will be much stronger up front. TCU always carries a stout defense and they return 8 starters, including Devonte Fields who was the BIG 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 but had to take a medical redshirt last year. Fields is a 'beast' and this will be one of the BIG 12's best defensive lines. TCU always has a solid secondary and the linebackers all ALL senior starters so I fully expect the Horned Frogs to be wreaking havoc. If Boykin gets inserted as the kickoff/punt returner, then watch out because this guy is electric. ***Brandon's Power Play*** October 4th : TCU @ Oklahoma**** Play on : TCU as a 'Pk' or a Home Underdog**** I like TCU to win this game at home vs. the Oklahoma Sooners. It is very possible that Oklahoma will come into this game 4-0 , the feeling is they will be 'looking ahead' to the Red River Rivalry the following week (10/11) vs. Texas. While Oklahoma does come into this game off a week of rest, I have to think that much of the bye week will be targeted towards the Texas Longhorns as Stoops knows how huge this rivalry game is I will remind you that Texas beat the Sooners 36-20 last season and outgained them 445-263 so they will definitely be putting more of their focus towards the Longhorns . This is a big revenge game for TCU and I look for their offense to be MUCH more productive. In last year's game, Boykin only threw for 166 yards and TCU's best two running backs didn't even touch the ball. Not only that, but their top two receivers didn't make a catch either. Look for BIG changes in this game. I like the home field advantage in this game and honestly, I still have questions about the Sooner's offense and I feel TCU can keep them under 20 points in this game. Look for TCU to get the WIN and I will also say that I will be giving them a closer look the following week (10/11) when they travel to Baylor and will be a Double Digit Dog. (TCU outgained Baylor last year 410-370 and lost a close game, 41-38. *** Closing Thoughts: I am looking for TCU to win 10 games this season. I will call for them to win @ SMU, @West Virginia, and @ Kansas. They will win at least 7 of their 8 home games and I look for the TCU Horned Frogs to be in the hunt to play in the Big 12 Championship.
