The Miami Hurricanes will be severely shorthanded when they face ACC foe Maryland tonight in the season opener for both as eight UM players will miss the game due to suspension in the beginning of the fallout of the Nevin Shapiro scandal. Maryland opened as a 3-point favorite on Bodog’s college football odds.

Arguably Miami’s best players will miss this game, led by quarterback Jacory Harris, who was likely to beat out competitor Stephen Morris for the No. 1 job, and linebacker Sean Spence, who may be the best at his position in the ACC. Also out are defensive linemen Olivier Vernon, Adewale Ojomo and Marcus Forston, safety Ray Ray Armstrong, considered among the nation's top players at his position, tight end Dyron Dye and receiver Travis Benjamin, who is also a dynamic kick returner. Harris, Spence, Benjamin, Forston and Ojomo must sit out one game and make restitution for accepting benefits after enrolling at UM. The others are suspended additional games.

Morris, a sophomore, made his first career start in place of an injured Harris last season against Maryland in Miami. He was 18-for-30 for 286 yards, one TD and two interceptions in the Hurricanes’ 26-20 victory. Morris hit Leonard Hankerson (now in the NFL) for a 35-yard score with 37 seconds left. The touchdown capped an 82-yard drive that began with 3:06 left and Miami trailing 20-18.

This game will be the debut of new Terps coach Randy Edsall, formerly of Connecticut. He has one of the nation’s top young QBs in Danny O’Brien. He took over as starter a few games into last season and went 7-3, passing for 2,438 yards to become the first Terp to ever win the ACC Rookie of the Year award. O’Brien’s 22 TD passes were third in the conference and fourth among all freshmen nationally in 2010. O’Brien had probably his worst game last year against Miami, going just 9-for-28 for 134 yards with a TD and interception.
