Nothing gets my sports gambling juices
flowing like the thought of Super Bowl
XLV.
To be truthful, as sports fans, we’ve
been downright spoiled by the last three
NFL championship games, but that is far
from a bad thing. In fact, that should only give you
plenty of reason to be excited about the
upcoming NFL betting season, especially
with Super Bowl XLV taking place at the
billion dollar estate of Jerry Jones
known as Cowboys Stadium. In 2008, the New York Giants posted
one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl
history when they upended the previously
undefeated New England Patriots 17-14 in
a barn burner that was won in the dying
seconds on Plaxico Burress’s fingertips.
And, of course, who hasn’t seen the
Helmet Catch? The battle between the Pittsburgh
Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals at
Super Bowl XLIII is heralded as one of
the best games in NFL history, and
nobody can possibly forget Santonio
Holmes’ miraculous, tip-toe catch in the
corner of the endzone that won the game. Last year, the Indianapolis Colts
entered as heavy favorites against the
runaway train known as the New Orleans
Saints. While it seemed an impossible
idea to bet against Peyton Manning,
destiny belonged to Drew Brees and the
beleaguered city of New Orleans instead
as Brees mounted a stunning day of 32
completions on 39 attempts with 288
passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Super Bowl has been a stage where
heroes are born; where Lombardi Trophies
offer the only vindication for five
months of hell; and has traditionally
been the single, biggest, sports betting
day in North America. With the 2010 NFL betting season upon
us, which team will claim its own
destiny? Where will the heroes come
from? Who will have to suffer the heart
wrenching defeat under the big lights?
Right now, the favorite to win is the
Indianapolis Colts at +800 out of the
AFC followed closely by the New Orleans
Saints at +900. A rematch between these
two teams would be epic, and a chance
for Peyton to seek revenge. There’s really no reason to doubt the
Colts as favorites this year, but only
from the point of view that they are the
most deserving favorite on the board. Do you think the Saints will be as
lucky this year as they were last year?
They’re an incredibly complete team, but
one thing you can’t negate is their
schedule. They faced just four playoff
teams last year in the regular season
losing only to Dallas in Week 15 as
heavy favorites but faced the Jets early
on in the season before they started
rolling, and caught Philadelphia in Week
2 when McNabb was injured. They say luck is a mixture of “timing
and opportunity”, and the Saints had a
perfect blend last year as they went
13-3 SU. All the teams at +900 are
questionable. The San Diego Chargers and
Dallas Cowboys have hefty odds. I’m
still not sure exactly. To bet on them
now means you’re investing in the NFL
futures of Wade Philips and Norv Turner.
