Whenever a star player gets injured in any capacity heading in to a
championship contest, the betting line is going to wobble and that’s exactly
what’s happened to the Colts’ Super Bowl odds when reports of Dwight Freeney’s
bum ankle hit the pipeline. The truth about the injury is unknown, but the
usually tight-lipped Colts confirmed to the league that Freeney has “a
third-degree, low basketball sprain” which left many wondering what that
actually meant. In sports terms, that particular explanation is defined as a
torn ankle ligament.
That’s bad news for a finesse player like Freeney who spun and clubbed his way
to 13.5 sacks, ranking second overall amongst defensive players this year. It’s
even worse news for those that jumped the proverbial and gun and took the
Indianapolis Colts as their victor on the
Super Bowl betting line.
The public was leaning on the Colts so hard during the past week that the
moneyline even inflated to -220 on the board before news of the injury broke
out.
Now Peyton Manning and Indy are back to -200. Turns out the injury was enough
for the public and the oddsmakers, to believe that Freeney won’t be anywhere
near 100% for Sunday, making anyone’s Super Bowl prediction a shaky call.
Freeney is often double-teamed, allowing other defensive linemen to break
through to the quarterback. When he’s caught in one-on-one, Freeney can rush
opposing quarterbacks with his killer speed and incredible foot work.
With a gimpy ankle, Freeney will not only be less than healthy for the game, he
won’t be able to rely on the moves that he’s built his career on. Furthermore,
even if he’s able to start the game, the Colts’ betting bandwagon won’t be able
to rely on him going the distance or impacting Drew Brees enough to tilt the
game in Indy’s favor.
