No coach in college football likes making a quarterback change more than South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier, and the Ol’ Ball Coach is at it again, having named Connor Shaw as his starter for this week’s game against Kentucky. The No. 18 Gamecocks opened as 21-point home favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

You could see this coming after Saturday’s 16-13 loss to Auburn in which South Carolina (4-1) had a season-low 289 yards of offense. Previous starting QB Stephen Garcia, a fifth-year senior, was just 9-for-23 for 160 yards with two interceptions – he was picked off four times the week before against Vanderbilt. He’s completing just 51.7 percent of his passes with four scores and nine interceptions on the season. The USC pass offense is in the bottom 20 in the nation.

Shaw, a sophomore, started the opener against East Carolina but was yanked after USC fell down 17-0, with Garcia then leading the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win. Shaw has passed for 29 yards on 4-of-11 passing this season. Spurrier said Shaw could be the starter the rest of the season if he plays well Saturday.

Kentucky has lost three in a row and has one of the nation’s worst offenses, ranking No. 113 in passing and scoring. The Wildcats have scored more than 17 points just once so far this season and have managed only 17 total in the past two games. In Saturday’s 35-7 loss to LSU, Kentucky was held to 155 total yards. Kentucky (2-3) did not threaten to score until LSU led 35-0. QB Morgan Newton was benched after a lousy first half but returned to the game in the fourth quarter and is likely to remain the starter for now.

Last year, Kentucky ended a 10-game losing streak in this series with a 31-28 win despite trailing 28-10 at halftime. Garcia threw for a career-high 382 yards along with two touchdowns and two interceptions in that one.
