Can a team lose its conference title game and just a few hours later get a spot in the BCS National Championship Game? We may find that answer out this weekend if red-hot Georgia can upset LSU in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. LSU (12-0) has barely been challenged this season by any team other than current BCS No. 2 Alabama – the Tide essentially caught a break by finish behind LSU in the SEC West and thus don’t have to play dangerous Georgia. LSU seemed to lock itself into a BCS title spot regardless of this result with last week’s impressive 44-17 win over then-No. 3 Arkansas. The Tigers punished Arkansas with 286 yards rushing, wiping out a 14-point deficit. LSU clinched its fifth SEC West title, the second most since the SEC Championship Game was first played in 1992 (Alabama leads with seven).
 
The 17 points allowed by LSU was the most in a SEC game this season. It's the most points the Tigers allowed since allowing 21 at West Virginia on Sept. 24. Still, they are No. 2 in the nation in total defense and scoring defense and No. 4 against the run. But Georgia is no slouch on defense, ranking No. 5 in total defense, No. 6 against the run and No. 10 in scoring.
 
No. 14 Georgia (10-2) opened the season with losses to Boise State – also in Atlanta – and South Carolina but has won 10 straight. The only ranked team the Dawgs beat at the time was last week’s 31-17 win at Georgia Tech as QB Aaron Murray threw for 252 yards and four scores. With all due respect to Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson, Murray is the best QB LSU will have faced this year. Murray has four games with at least four TD passes this season and has 32 total touchdowns this year, tied for the third-most by any SEC quarterback since 2000, and eighth-most all-time by an SEC player. He has two games left to catch Andre Woodson's SEC record of 40, set in 2007.
 
Georgia played the Yellow Jackets without freshman RB Isaiah Crowell. But Crowell, who had an ankle injury, should start. He leads Georgia with 832 yards rushing and five touchdowns, including four 100-yard games. Georgia and LSU are the SEC's top teams in time of possession. Georgia leads the league by possessing the ball for an average of 33 minutes, 34 seconds per game, while LSU is just behind with an average of 32:44.
 
Georgia and LSU haven’t faced off since 2009, a 20-3 LSU win in Athens. The series is 1-1 in SEC title games. The Bulldogs are 1-3 all-time vs. No. 1-ranked teams. A Dawgs’ win here sends them to the Sugar Bowl. LSU is 6-0 ATS in past six SEC games. It is 7-1 ATS in past eight vs. teams with a winning record. Georgia is 0-6 ATS in past six as a dog.
