Led by sophomore QB
Casey Pachall, the Horned Frogs (10-2 SU, 6-6 ATS) finished
first in the Mountain West Conference this season after losing their opening
game 50-48 on the road at Baylor. Their only other defeat was an overtime loss
to SMU back on October 1.
TCU then reeled off seven consecutive
victories to wind up their regular season, including wins over Boise State
(which was ranked No. 5 in the country at that time) and a season-ending 56-9
rout of UNLV. The Horned Frogs ranked ninth in FBS with 41.7 points per game,
and 30th overall in points allowed at 21.3 per game.
Louisiana Tech (8-4
SU, 10-2 ATS) emerged as champions of the Western Athletic Conference after
losing four of their first five games. The Bulldogs stormed back to win their
final seven matchups, including a 44-0 shutout of New Mexico State in their
final regular-season outing. Overall, they ranked 41st in scoring at 30.6 points
per game and 34th in points allowed at 22.5 per game.
This will be the
third appearance by TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl since it was created in 2005, and
they won both previous games - in 2006 over Northern Illinois and more memorably
in 2008 by a single point over Boise State. Louisiana Tech will be making its
first appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl.
The Horned Frogs are listed as
a 10-point favorite to make it three-for-three against the Bulldogs on Wednesday
night.
