The first day of the college football bowl season concludes on Saturday night
from the Superdome with a New Orleans Bowl matchup of San Diego State and
Louisiana-Lafayette, with the Aztecs opening as 5-point favorites on Bovada’s NCAA football betting odds.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (8-4)
dropped their final two games but finished third in the Sun Belt Conference) and
are in their first bowl game since the 1970 Grantland Rice Bowl. Their only
other postseason appearance was a 24-7 victory over Arkansas A&M in the 1944
Oil Bowl. Quarterback Blaine Gautier is one touchdown pass from
setting a Ragin’ Cajuns single-season record: He is currently tied with
Jake Delhomme with 20 on the season. Gautier leads the SBC in
the Sun Belt in passing efficiency (150.3) and was second in TD passes. He
completed a career-best 63.2 percent of his passes this season. A win here would
tie a school record for a season.
In his first year replacing
Brady Hoke (now at Michigan) as head coach, Rocky Long
led SDSU to an 8-4 record and third-place finish in the Mountain West.
San Diego State has one of the nation's leading rushers, in Ronnie
Hillman, who finished third in the country with 1,656 yards
(second-most in school history) along with 19 touchdowns. He could star against
a ULL that allowed 25 touchdowns on the ground this season. Hillman has nine
100-yard rushing games and six 150-yard contests, both which have tied a school
record
In 2010, SDSU defeated Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl, 35-14, for
the school’s first bowl win since 1969 behind Hillman’s 228 yards and four
scores. This year’s game marks the first time in SDSU’s Division I history that
it will attend back-to-back bowl games. SDSU has won four straight against
unranked opponents and is 11-2 in its last 13 contests against teams ranked
outside the Top 25. San Diego State hasn’t faced a current member of the Sun
Belt since 1976.
