The NHL handicapping season is in full swing, and hockey bettors are looking anywhere they can to find edges in an effort to one-up the bookmakers. Many players in the league have established track records and it’s by looking at their history that we can begin to find holes in the oddsmakers’ lines. Here is a look at some stats and trends worth keeping an eye on when breaking down the board this week, and in the weeks ahead. The Tampa Bay Lightning are 13-3 in their last 16 games against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Lightning have been red-hot of late, winning seven of their last eight contests. Meanwhile, their counterpart on Monday, the Flyers, have dropped six of eight. While Philadelphia gets this game at home, Tampa Bay has won five of the last seven meetings between the teams at the Wells Fargo Center. The Lightning are the highest-scoring team in the NHL at the moment. Top center Steven Stamkos leads the team with 22 goals, while second-line center Tyler Johnson leads the team with 28 assists and 45 points. The duo was recently named to the All-Star team, and will be looking to justify those selections on Monday. Now they look to extend their solid play against a Flyers team that the team has owned, winning seven in a row against Philadelphia, and nine of 10. For Johnson, he’s only known victory against the Flyers, with the team winning all six of the matchups he’s been a part of. In those games he’s recorded three goals and five assists. Stamkos enjoys playing against the Flyers even more, recording nine goals and four assists in the past eight matchups. Meanwhile, the Flyers are down their goaltender at the wrong time, as Steve Mason is expected to miss two weeks with a lower-body injury, which he suffered in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. Backup Ray Emery gave up all three of those goals on 13 shots against Boston. The Lightning figure to be just fine between the pipes. Goaltender Ben Bishop has posted a 1.67 GAA in going 3-0 over his last three starts. The over is 6-1 in the Los Angeles Kings’ last seven home games. The Toronto Maple Leafs come to town on Monday night, and that could mean some goals. The over is 3-0-2 in the Kings’ last five games, and it is 4-1 in the Maple Leafs’ last five games. These teams met once already this season, and that game produced seven goals. In two games under interim head coach Peter Horachek, the Leafs have played in games that have produced eight, and seven goals. That figures to mean another high-scoring affair against a Kings squad that has scored 13 goals while allowing 16 over their last three contests.
