Vancouver (47-17-9) has been surging, racking up seven consecutive victories. The streak came to an end last Friday thanks to a 3-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. The Canucks have had four full off-days to rest up and think about it.

The  mood is somber in Vancouver, as the team figures out what to do without Manny Malhotra. The center was struck near the eye last week; he’s finished for the season and could suffer long-term effects. Malhotra was second in the NHL on faceoffs at 61.7 percent and is a major part of the team's penalty killing unit. Without Malhotra in the lineup, Phoenix scored two power-play goals last Friday.

On a positive note, Daniel Sedin continued his hot streak. The winger picked up an assist to extend his point streak to eight games; Sedin has six goals and 14 points in that span. Twin brother Henrik Sedin was blanked against the Coyotes, bringing his seven-game point streak to an end.

Detroit (43-21-9) has played a topsy-turvy March. The Wings opened the month with a four-game losing streak but promptly followed it up with four consecutive wins. They’ve now lost another two straight after falling 5-4 in a shootout to Pittsburgh on Monday.

Injuries continue to plague the Red Wings. Forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower-body injury) and Johan Franzen (groin) have both missed the past two games. Datsyuk is second on the club in points while Franzen leads the team in goals, so Detroit is obviously desperate to get them back. Jiri Hudler, one of the team’s key role players, has missed three straight games with a back injury.
