The San Jose Sharks are now the longest of the longshots on the NHL betting
board to win the Stanley Cup; to improve those odds they'll need to beat the
Vancouver Canucks in Game 5 of the Western Conference final on Tuesday
night. The Sharks fell into a 3-1 series hole with a 4-2 home loss to the Canucks in Game 4 of the series on Sunday afternoon. That defeat dropped San Jose to +2000 on the Bodog NHL Stanley Cup odds board. Vancouver leads the current Stanley Cup odds at -160. Sunday was a day to forget for Sharks goalie Antti Niemi,
who allowed four goals on just 13 Canucks shots in the loss. That included three
power-play markers over the span of two minutes in the middle of the second
period. Sami Salo scored twice with the man advantage for the
Canucks in Game 4, while Ryan Kesler and Alex
Burrows had the team's other goals. Henrik Sedin and
Daniel Sedin combined for seven assists in the contest, and
Roberto Luongo made 33 saves. Andrew Desjardins and Ryane Clowe replied
for the Sharks in Sunday's loss, while San Jose center Joe
Thornton had to leave the game in the third period with an undisclosed
upper-body injury. Thornton leads the team with 17 points in 17 playoff games,
and is probable to play on Tuesday. Vancouver played without defencemen Christian Ehrhoff (upper
body) and Aaron Rome (upper body) in Game 4, while forward
Mikael Samuelsson will miss the rest of the postseason. The Canucks are -170 favorites on the Bodog odds for Game 5, with the Sharks
listed as the +150 underdogs. The total sits at 5.5 goals. If the Canucks fail to finish off the Sharks on Tuesday night the two teams
will return to San Jose for Game 6 on Thursday. Game 7 would be in Vancouver on
Saturday. Get all your NHL odds at
