P>Will the addition of a top-flight goaltender be enough to finally put either the Philadelphia Flyers or the Washington Capitals over the top when the NHL betting season gets underway in October?

The annual free agency rush has settled down, and two of the biggest moves of the summer were Eastern Conference contenders adding to their talent between the pipes: The Flyers traded for Ilya Bryzgalov and signed him to a lucrative long-term contract, and the Capitals added Tomas Vokoun on a modest free-agent deal.

And now both those clubs sit in the top tier of Stanley Cup contenders on the Bodog hockey futures page, with each at 10/1 odds to claim the championship.

Philadelphia didn't stop with bringing in Bryzgalov; they shook up the foundation of their team by trading away centers Mike Richards and Jeff Carter and importing former NHL star winger Jaromir Jagr from the KHL. Those were the biggest risks taken by any team this summer, and it remains to be seen how all the pieces will go together.

In comparison, the Caps' offseason moves so far have been tame; Vokoun ran out of landing spots and was a cheap option for Washington, and its other top acquisitions mainly fill out the bottom half of its roster (Joel Ward, Jeff Halpern, Roman Hamrlik).

The bottom line – by improving their goaltending both of these contending teams should also have improved their championship chances.

The top teams on the Stanley Cup odds list at Bodog right now are the Vancouver Canucks (13/2), Pittsburgh Penguins (8/1), and Boston Bruins (9/1) – clubs that haven't made major moves so far this offseason.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers both improved their championship chances with big free-agent signings; the Sabres added winger Ville Leino and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, while the Rangers picked up center Brad Richards. Buffalo is at 20/1 on the Cup odds list, with the Rangers at 35/1 odds.
