The winner of Wednesday night’s Rangers-Sabres game can feel a little better about their playoff chances, but the loser will be sweating just a bit  more as the season winds down. New York enters this game with 87 points and seventh in the Eastern Conference. Buffalo is eighth with 85 points and just three ahead of No. 9 Carolina. The Sabres are -125 favorites on Bodog’s NHL odds for this matchup.

Obviously this game is more important for the Sabres with Carolina breathing down their necks. Goalie Ryan Miller had been red hot, winning the NHL’s No. 1 star last week in going 3-0-0 with two shutouts and a 0.67 goals-against average in stopping 83 of 85 shots. However, Miller wasn’t great on Tuesday night in a 4-3 loss to Toronto that still gave the Leafs faint playoff hopes. Miller allowed four goals on 35 shots. Still, Buffalo is on an 11-4-3 run. It is 8-8-2 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

The Rangers are 6-0-1 in their last seven games and 8-1-1 in the last 10. They enter off a 1-0 win at Boston on Saturday night and are 4-0-1 in their past five road games. Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 26 shots for his league-leading 11th shutout. Rangers skaters blocked a whopping 29 shots before the even got to Lundqvist. The Rangers' 23 road wins this season (23-14-1) mark their highest total away from Madison Square Garden since securing 24 in their Stanley-Cup winning season in 1993-94. New York rookie Derek Stepan made history on the Rangers' first trip to Buffalo this season, becoming the fourth NHL player to record a hat trick in his debut as he led the charge in a 6-3 victory. On Saturday, he scored the only goal in the Rangers' victory in Boston, becoming the youngest 20-goal scorer for the Rangers since Alexei Kovalev in 1992-93.

This is the last of four regular season meetings. Other than that opening night Rangers win led by Stepan, New York also won 3-2 in a shootout at home on Nov. 11, and the Sabres won 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on March 1.
