For months, the Tampa Bay Lightning looked like a potential candidate for a
Stanley Cup run. The floor has seemingly fallen out, though, and now the Bolts
face a red-hot Chicago Blackhawks team with rapidly increasing NHL
odds. Tampa Bay (37-21-8) has lost four consecutive games, but Monday’s 2-1 shootout loss to Washington was the most demoralizing. Tampa led until late in the third, but the Caps tied the game before winning it in the shootout. To make matters worse, the victory allowed Washington to leapfrog Tampa Bay
for first place in the Southeast Division standings. Now the Capitals sit third
overall in the East, while Tampa Bay tumbled to fifth—meaning no home-ice
advantage in the first round of the playoffs. With goaltending being a major question in Tampa Bay, the offense was
absolutely necessary in carrying the club. Goal scoring has dried up, though, as
the Bolts have managed just five goals in their past four games. It’s a shame
since the team has actually received pretty solid goaltending in that span,
holding New Jersey, Boston and Washington to just three regulation goals. Chicago has been one of the best teams in the NHL over the past few weeks,
now with 14/1 odds of
winning the Stanley Cup. The Blackhawks are coming off a game against the
Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.
Though Chicago boasts some impressive stars up front—Jonathan
Toews, Patrick Kane, Patrick
Sharp—the club is getting great efforts from all of its lines. The
Blackhawks are piling up goals with reckless abandon. In a 5-3 win over the
Leafs on Saturday, for example, five different players scored and 12 different
players picked up a point. Get all your NHL odds at
