NHL betting gets
serious this week with the Stanley Cup playoffs finally arriving. In the Eastern
Conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Pittsburgh (49-25-8) had a rather impressive season considering all the bad blows it was dealt. The Penguins lost their best two players—Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin—for a massive chunk of the season. Somehow, the club played its way to a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference and just narrowly missed winning the Atlantic Division. But winning in the playoffs is going to be tough without Crosby and Malkin.
Pittsburgh simply doesn’t have much talent up front right now; despite missing
the three months, Crosby still leads the team in scoring, while defenseman
Kris Letang was second. Guys like Chris Kunitz
and Tyler Kennedy work hard, but they can’t carry the
offense. If Pittsburgh wins, it will be thanks to Marc-Andre Fleury.
He’s a proven playoff goalie with a Stanley Cup to his credit, and Fleury is as
good as anybody when he gets hot. Just look at a stretch in late March, when he
backstopped Pittsburgh to three straight overtime victories. Tampa Bay (46-25-11) has arrived on the playoff scene a little sooner than
everyone expected, earning the fifth seed in the East. Though it will take work,
the young team does have 20/1 odds of
winning the Stanley Cup (compared to Pittsburgh's 11/1) The team can score, that’s for sure. Martin St. Louis and
Steven Stamkos both topped 90 points, while Vinny
Lecavalier, Simon Gagne and Ryan
Malone can all put the puck in the net. As always, the question in Tampa Bay is goaltending. The Lightning are
annually let down by shaky play between the pipes but, with veteran
Dwayne Roloson on board, perhaps this year will be different.
Rollie the Goalie has plenty of playoff experience and played very well for
Tampa this season (18-12-0, 2.56 GAA, .912 save percentage). Tampa and Pittsburgh met four times this season, with each team picking up
two wins. Get all your NHL odds at
