It was another crushing week in the NFL in terms of injuries. I already wrote about Chiefs star
running back Jamaal Charles here at the Beat, but his torn ACL was far from
the only key injury in Week 2. Here are some of the key ones. Michael Vick, Eagles quarterback: In his return to Atlanta, Vick wasn’t able to finish the game after suffering a concussion when his head collided with the body of his own offensive lineman. On Monday, the Eagles’ trainer wouldn’t speculate on a timeframe for Vick to return. He said Vick would need to have an MRI, see a neurologist and undergo "impact" testing from the team before he could be cleared to practice. Philly coach Andy Reid on Monday wouldn't say whether Mike
Kafka or Vince Young would start if Vick can't play against the New York Giants in the Eagles' home opener on Sunday. Young was inactive Sunday with a bad hamstring. Kafka was 7-for-9 for 72 yards in Vick’s place vs. the Falcons. Gabe Carimi, Bears offensive tackle: The huge rookie from
Wisconsin suffered what is being reported as a dislocated right knee in Sunday’s
loss to the Saints and is expected to miss four weeks. This is a huge because
Carimi, a right tackle, was arguably the team’s best lineman vs. New Orleans.
And that’s not saying much considering the Saints sacked Jay Cutler six times
and were seemingly in the Chicago backfield all day. Cutler is on pace to be
sacked 88 times this season. Thomas Davis, Panthers linebacker: Davis’ career might be
over after he suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s loss to Green Bay. Amazingly, it’s
the third straight year that Davis has torn his right ACL. Carolina already had
lost its other top linebacker, Jon Beason, for the season. Eddie Royal, Broncos receiver: Royal, the team’s No. 2
receiver, is expected to miss 2-4 weeks after straining his groin in the
Broncos' Week 2 win over the Bengals. The decimated Broncos receiving corps was
already down to three healthy receivers before Royal's injury. Tim Tebow came
into the game as a slot receiver to replace Royal on third downs. It’s likely
that Eric Decker will take Royal’s starting spot. Denver coach John Fox made it
clear that Tebow won’t become a receiver. Miles Austin, Cowboys receiver, and Felix Jones, Cowboys running
back: The Cowboys perhaps had the worst injury Sunday in their overtime
win over San Francisco. QB Tony Romo has fractured ribs but managed to return to
the game and lead the win. But Jones suffered a separated shoulder and Austin
hurt his hamstring. Jones was fitted for a harness on the sideline and was able
to return for the second series. As the game wore on, however, he was limited
and DeMarco Murray and Tashard Choice handled the tailback duties. Austin had a
huge game but reportedly now may be out until through the Cowboys’ bye week
(Oct. 9). Nick Mangold, Jets center: Mangold, an All-Pro, underwent an
MRI Monday morning, which reportedly confirmed a high-ankle sprain. Mangold is
expected to miss at least two games. Mangold was injured late in the first
quarter Sunday and never returned to the Jets' 32-3 win over the Jacksonville
Jaguars. Linebacker Daryl Smith rolled up the back of Mangold's right leg on a
running play by Shonn Greene. Mangold never saw him. Bet on Week 3 of the NFL season now at the Web’s gaming
