The two most surprising teams in the NFL last year had to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs. Both teams rebounded from a combined seven wins in 2009 to each go 10-6 in 2010. That was good enough for the AFC West title for Kansas City, while the Bucs joined a short list of teams in history to not get a playoff berth with double-digit wins. The two kick off their preseason tonight, on national TV (Fox), in Kansas City. The Chiefs are 4-point favorites on Bodog’s NFL odds.

The first thing everyone wants to know about an exhibition game is how long the starters will play. Instead of limiting the starters to just one series or a dozen plays, as most coaches would do, Bucs coach Raheem Morris plans to play starters such as quarterback Josh Freeman and running back LeGarrette Blount for about 20 plays. The Bucs’ starting offensive line will play as long as Freeman does to keep the rising star hopefully injury-free. Freeman, incidentally, was born in Kansas City and played at Kansas State but has never played in Arrowhead Stadium. Tonight is also the chance to see the Bucs’ top two draft picks, defensive ends Adrian Clayborn and Da’Quan Bowers, who are both Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates on Bodog’s NFL futures. The Bucs need a better pass rush this year after having just 26 sacks a season ago.

The Chiefs haven't said how long their starters will play, though quarterback Matt Cassel plans to start the game. The amount of time they spend on the field probably will depend on how successful they are during their first series. Meanwhile, the Chiefs were last in the NFL in passing a season ago so they drafted WR Jonathan Baldwin out of Pitt and signed former Arizona Cardinal WR Steve Breaston to help out Pro Bowler Dwayne Bowe.  All three will play tonight, although Bowe probably the least.
