The Oakland Raiders won’t make their first playoff appearance since 2002
solely with a win Sunday over the San Diego Chargers on the regular season’s
final day, but one thing is for sure: Oakland is out with a loss. The host
Raiders are 3-point favorites on Bovada’s NFL football betting odds.

To win the AFC West, Oakland
needs a win over San Diego and a Denver loss at home to Kansas City. To get the
conference’s final wild-card spot, presuming a Broncos win and Raiders win,
Oakland must have a Cincinnati loss (vs. Baltimore) and Tennessee loss (at
Houston) OR a Bengals loss and Jets loss (at Miami).
The Raiders kept
their season alive last week, ending a three-game losing streak with a 16-13
overtime win over the Chiefs on Sebastian Janikowski’s 36-yard
field goal. Still, it wasn’t a pretty win. The Raiders were vastly outgained and
the NFL’s most-penalized team had 15 more for 92 yards. The Raiders have been
penalized 155 times for 1,293 yards this season. Kansas City has the NFL record
with 158 for 1,304, set in 1998.
Oakland played its eighth straight game
without starting RB Darren McFadden last week. He is hoping to
get back Sunday, as is WR Jacoby Ford. Safety Michael
Huff, who has missed the past two games, guarantees he will
play.
San Diego had been on a typical late-season surge under
Norv Turner but was outclassed last week in Detroit 38-10 to
end the Chargers’ playoff hopes. QB Philip Rivers continued his
up-and-down season with two more picks against the Lions. San Diego will miss
the postseason for a second straight year after making it five times in a
six-season stretch. And it almost assuredly means Turner will be fired, likely
as soon as Monday.
Oakland and San Diego met in Week 10, with the
Raiders winning 24-17. Raiders QB Carson Palmer threw two
touchdown passes and Michael Bush, who has been starting for
McFadden, ran 30 times for a season-high 157 yards and one touchdown. Rivers
threw for 274 yards and two scores in that one. The Chargers are 0-5 ATS in the
past five meetings with Oakland after dominating this series for years. Oakland
has covered 10 of its past 12 vs. AFC West.
