The San Diego Chargers picked up five losses in their first seven games of
the season last year, and that was that – they finished second in the AFC West
division standings to the Kansas City Chiefs and missed the playoffs. Was that result an aberration? San Diego finished last season strong, ending up 9-7 overall with an 8-8 mark against the NFL betting odds. That put them just a game back of the Chiefs after 16 games despite the slow start, and Kansas City was widely considered to have played over its head. As well, the Chargers didn't really have any issues scoring or defending last
season – they put up the most points in the AFC West (441) and allowed the
fewest number of points in the division (322). Special teams were a concern for
San Diego, but that's an area a team can improve with a little tinkering. So add all that together and you have the Chargers pegged as the -250
favorites to return to form and win the AFC West title in 2011. San Diego is
also getting high odds of 11/2 to win the AFC Championship and 11/1 odds to win
the Super Bowl. At the Bodog Sportsbook the team's wins OVER/UNDER for the
season is pegged at 10. San Diego had more wins last season than any other non-playoff team in the
AFC, which of course is little consolation to those who put money down on the NFL
futures for the Chargers to do well in the postseason last year.
Philip Rivers and company will be gunning for a quick start
this season to put last year's mess behind them. And the Chargers are hoping to make the Vikings their first victim of the
season, as they host Minnesota in Week 1 action on Sunday afternoon. Get all your NFL Props at
