The NCAA’s “First Four” concludes on Wednesday with two more games in Dayton,
with the first coming between No. 16 seeds Texas-San Antonio and Alabama State,
with UTSA opening as a 4-point favorite on Bodog’s NCAA Tournament odds. Texas-San Antonio (19-13) enters on a five-game winning streak. The Roadrunners finished in the middle of the pack in the Southland Conference during the regular season but then made a surprising run in the conference tournament and beat favored McNeese State 75-72 in the title game on March 12. That got UTSA its fourth overall NCAA Tournament appearance – 0-3 in the previous three – and first since 2004. Devin Gibson is the star of this team. He was named most outstanding player of
the conference tournament in averaging 23 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists. Alabama State (17-17) finished fourth in the regular season in the SWAC but
won three games in the conference tournament, beating Grambling State 65-48 in
the title game on March 12. The Hornets won the title and the league's automatic
berth for the fourth time in school history and second time in three seasons.
Alabama State has actually won 11 of its past 12 games and avenged that one loss
to Grambling. Tramayne Moorer is the star of this club. He was
named SWAC Tournament MVP after averaging 13.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per
game. This is the first-ever meeting between these teams. The winner will advance
to Friday's second round in Cleveland against the nation's overall No. 1 seed
Ohio State. Madness would be missing out on March Madness at Bodog!
