The Butler Bulldogs are one win from pulling off perhaps the most unlikely
back-to-back Final Four runs in decades, but they face what appears to be a
peaking Florida team on Saturday in the Southeast Region championship game in
New Orleans. The Gators have opened as 3-point favorites on Bodog’s NCAA
basketball odds, but being an underdog is nothing new for Butler. Butler (26-9) beat Wisconsin 61-54 in the Sweet 16. And it wasn’t really that close as the Bulldogs led by 20 at one point. Their first two games came down to the last possession. Matt Howard, who scored the winning points in the first two games, was against the star with 20 points and 12 rebounds against Wisconsin. Butler totally disrupted Wisconsin star Jon Leuer. He averaged 18.7 points per game coming in but was 1-for-12 shooting and finished with three
points. As a team, the Badgers shot 30.4 percent, their second-worst performance of the season. The Bulldogs haven’t lost since a Feb. 3 defeat to a Youngstown State team that finished 2-16 in conference play. Florida (29-7) avenged a first-round NCAA Tournament defeat last year against
BYU by beating the Cougars 83-74 in overtime on Thursday. Alex Tyus
was the star, scoring 19 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, with the
latter tying a school record in a postseason game. He also became just the 11th
player since 2000 to record at least 19 points and 17 rebounds in an NCAA
Tournament game. Tyus was nearly perfect, making 8 of 9 shots and going 2-for-3
from the line. UF is in the Elite Eight for the fourth time in school history
and first since 2007 when the Gators won their second of back-to-back
titles. Madness would not be betting on the NCAA Tournament at Bodog!
