If you think Richmond coach Chris Mooney is a hot commodity
for some of those bigger school head coaching jobs now, just imagine what he
might command if his Spiders upset Kansas in the Sweet 16 on Friday night.
However, his Spiders are 10.5-point underdogs for this Southwest Region game in
San Antonio. Richmond (29-7), the Atlantic 10 Tournament champion, beat Vanderbilt by three in your annual No. 12 vs. No. 5 upset in the first round and then easily handled Morehead State, 65-48, in the Round of 32. Senior Kevin Anderson is the star. He has averaged more than 26 points in the Spiders' last five victories against ranked teams, and the 25 he scored against Vanderbilt included the game-winning floater with 18.7 seconds to play. He followed that up with 14 points against
Morehead State. Senior forward Justin Harper leads Richmond in scoring (17.8), rebounding (6.9), three-pointers (75), blocked shots (46) and free throw percentage (79.3). The Spiders have won nine straight since a loss to Temple on Feb. 17. They have not won this many in a row since the 1990-91 season. Kansas (34-2) has looked impressive since a sluggish first half in its
tournament opener against Boston U. The Jayhawks ended up beating the Terriers
by 19 and then stomped Illinois 73-59. Twin brothers Marcus and
Markieff Morris combined for 41 points and 24 rebounds against
the Illini. KU has caught a break in its bracket as it will not have to face a
team seeded better than No. 9 if it reaches the Final Four. The Jayhawks have
won 10 straight overall. This will be the second meeting all-time between the schools. Richmond upset
then-No. 12 Kansas in Lawrence 69-68 in 2004. Madness would not be betting on the NCAA Tournament at Bodog!
