The Big East got 11 teams into the NCAA Tournament and that 11th team was
Marquette. The Golden Eagles have more losses than any other club remaining and
now they face ACC regular-season champion North Carolina in Friday’s East Region
game in Newark, N.J. The Heels have opened as 4.5-point favorites on Bodog’s
NCAA basketball odds. Marquette (22-14) has gotten here with defense. In beating No. 6 seed Xavier and No. 3 Syracuse, the opposition averaged just 58.5 points and 16.5 turnovers. Xavier’s Tu Holloway, the best player in the Atlantic 10, shot 1-of-8 from the field for 5 points. Syracuse’s Scoop Jardine shot 2-of-8 for 6 points. The problem here is that Marquette’s weakness is inside play and that's where the Tar Heels, behind Tyler Zeller and John Henson,
could dominate. North Carolina (28-7) leads the nation in rebounding and has lost just once
in its past 12 games – that coming in the ACC Tournament final against Duke. The
Heels had little trouble with Long Island in their NCAA Tournament opener but
were pushed to the limit by Washington in the last round. Zeller scored 23
points, Harrison Barnes added 22 and North Carolina needed two
free throws from Dexter Strickland and two defensive stops in
the final second to beat the Huskies 86-83. Henson had his 14th straight game
with at least 10 rebounds and recorded his eighth straight double-double.
Kendall Marshall's 14 assists set a North Carolina record for
an NCAA Tournament game. The Tar Heels are into the second weekend for a record
24th time. This game will be all about tempo. If Marquette can keep the score in the 60s
it has a chance. If not, the Heels should advance. Madness would not be betting on the NCAA Tournament at Bodog!
