No BCS conference favorite has had the type of offseason that West Virginia
has. The Mountaineers had a solid 9-4 record last season and tied for first in
the Big East (but didn’t win
the tiebreaker). Then school officials were able to lure highly regarded
offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen from Oklahoma State to
serve as the OC and head coach-in-waiting behind Bill Stewart
this year. Apparently Stewart was not on board with that, as he
reportedly asked a few WVU-area newspaper reporters to dig up dirt on Holgorsen.
So Stewart was basically forced to resign and the top job is now Holgorsen’s.
Despite all this, WVU is the 2/1 favorite to win the Big East on Bodog’s NCAA football futures odds. Now the WVU offense should be spectacular – Oklahoma State had easily the best offense in school history last year under Holgorsen’s fast-paced attack. No player should benefit more than QB Geno Smith. In his first season starting last season, Smith was the second-team All-Big East selection after going 241-of-372 for 2,763 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His odds to win the Heisman got significantly better (literally) at Bodog when Holgorsen took over. The Mountaineers
certainly will miss RB Noel Devine, so it might be a running back-by-committee situation although Shawne Alston probably gets the most carries. Smith has a strong corps of returning receivers — four of the six players with 200 or more receiving yards return — including budding star Tavon Austin. The defense took a bit of hit in losing seven starters and was Top 10 in the
nation in scoring defense. Bruce Irvin led the Big East and
finished second nationally with 14 sacks despite not starting a game. He’ll move
into a full-time role, picking up the slack for the departed Scooter
Berry. Najee Goode is the only returning starter among
the linebackers. All-America Keith Tandy is back at cornerback
after making 57 tackles and picking off six passes last year. WVU opens Sept. 4 vs. Marshall and has an over/under of 9 wins on Bodog. Bet on 2011 NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
