Last season had to be considered a disappointment for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In their first season under coach Tommy Tuberville, TTU was 8-5 overall but just 3-5 in the Big 12. And off that team the Red Raiders lost a pair of quarterbacks, their starting running back and top two receivers. Texas Tech is 20/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football odds to win the Big 12 this season.

Seth Doege figures to be the starting QB this season. He was excellent in the spring game, completing 20 of 35 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Doege has waited his turn behind Graham Harrell and Taylor Potts and has three full seasons of practices and infrequent mop-up duty under his belt. Doege actually got a start for Tech in 2009 but played in just two games in 2010 and threw just four passes. He did complete three of them, for 58 yards. The Red Raiders should be in good shape at running back. Eric Stephens finished 16th in the nation in all-purpose yards per game (150.08) last year, and he should expect to carry even more of the load with the loss of leading rusher Baron Batch. TTU does have questions at receiver as it tries to find guys to replace Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis. The duo combined to catch 25 touchdowns in 2010. Overall five starters are due back.

On defense, eight starters are back. TTU is on its third defensive coordinator and defensive scheme in as many years. Following the dismissal of James Willis in December, Tuberville hired TCU safeties coach Chad Glasgow to bring the Horned Frogs’ 4-2-5 scheme to Lubbock. The Red Raiders ran a 3-4 last year when they were one of the nation’s worst defenses.

TTU opens the season Sept. 3 against Texas State and has an over/under win total on Bodog of 7.
