Last season was nothing short of an abject disaster for arguably the nation’s most powerful program, the University of Texas. The Horns, sans Colt McCoy in 2010, slipped from a national title game spot the season before to a 5-7 record and last in the Big 12 South. The Horns lost five home games (they had lost only four home games in the previous 10 seasons) and finished with their first losing season in 13 years – before Mack Brown arrived as coach. Can UT bounce back in 2011 with almost the entire coaching staff, other than Brown, having been overhauled? Texas is 13/2 on Bodog’s NCAA football futures to win the Big 12 title.

The problems were numerous last year but it always seems to fall on the QB and that was Garrett Gilbert in 2010. He was seemingly always close to being benched due to his struggles but never got pulled and started all 12 games. Gilbert completed 59.0 percent of his passes for 2,744 yards with 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions (most in the Big 12). He was picked off five times by Kansas State and three times each by Texas Tech and Iowa State. UT opened up the QB competition this offseason but Gilbert is still the favorite to win it. UT must take better care of the ball. Texas finished 116th in the Bowl Subdivision in turnover ratio. The Longhorns were minus-12 in seven games they lost and plus-three in the five games they won. The offensive line, one of the team’s biggest weaknesses in 2010, has to find three new starters. New offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin needs to re-establish the running game. Overall, eight starters are back on offense.

The defense lost five starters and highly regarded coordinator Will Muschamp, who got the Florida head coaching job. Last year the Horns finished sixth nationally in total defense (300.2 yards per game) and pass defense (161.6). The starting linebacker unit is the strength with seniors Emmanuel Acho and Keenan Robinson and sophomore Jordan Hicks. Texas lost three cornerbacks to the 2011 NFL draft.

UT opens the season Sept. 3 vs. Rice and has an over/under win total of 8.5 at Bodog.
