Remember back when Tennessee, and not Florida or Georgia, was the beast of the
SEC East? Well, it’s been a while, as the Vols haven’t played in the SEC Championship Game since
the 2007 season and haven’t even sniffed it since then, going a combined 18-20.
But this will be the first season since 2008 that Tennessee won’t be playing
under a new coach, so can Derek Dooley get the Vols back to
Atlanta in his second year at the helm? Tennessee is 15/2 to win the SEC East
Division and 18/1 to win the conference title on Bodog’s NCAA football odds. It will be a very young Vols team this year, with Dooley saying 70 percent of the roster will be freshmen and sophomores. Many of those sophomores were thrown into the fire as freshmen last season and more than held their own. Sophomore Tyler Bray is the guy at QB. After replacing Matt Simms late in the season, Bray threw for 300-plus yards in four of five starts, completing 100-of-177 passes with 16 touchdowns. Counting his work as the backup, Bray amassed 1,849 passing
yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Tauren Poole, a 1,034-yard rusher in 2010, will balance the attack, while Bray will pass to a receiver corps led by promising sophomores Justin Hunter and Da’Rick Rogers. Seven starters are back on offense. The defense brings back six starters from a unit that allowed 382.2 yards and
25.1 points per game last season. Senior Malik Jackson is an
All-SEC candidate at defensive tackle. After moving from end to tackle following
UT’s fifth game last year, Jackson totaled 10 tackles for loss, five sacks,
three quarterback hurries and an interception with three more pass breakups.
There are questions at linebacker, where two starters must be replaced. Former
top recruit Janzen Jackson, a safety, should lead the
secondary. He withdrew from school for some personal reasons (he was suspended
twice in his freshman season) in February but returned in July. UT opens its season Sept. 3 vs. Montana. The Vols’ over/under win total at
Bodog is 6.5. Bet on 2011 NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
