The Syracuse Orange were one of the surprise teams in the nation last season.
They were arguably the worst program in the Big East for years, but Syracuse
went 8-5 last year and beat Kansas State in the Pinstripe Bowl for the school’s
first bowl victory and winning season since 2001. Can Doug Marrone’s club now
contend for a Big East title?
SU is 18/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football futures to win the conference title. The offense should be good in 2011 with seven starters back. QB Ryan Nassib passed for 2,334 yards and 19 touchdowns while throwing eight interceptions in 2010. Leading rusher Delone Carter will be missed, but the new main man should be Antwon Bailey, who rushed for 554 yards (4.9 average) while appearing in all 13 games. The top five leading receivers from 2010 return. Van Chew led Syracuse in receptions (41), receiving yardage (611)
and touchdowns (five). Four of five starters are back on the line. The defense was the strength of Syracuse last year but eight seniors, seven
of them starters, are gone from a unit that allowed less than 20 points per
game. The Orange need to replace both defensive tackles, both cornerbacks and
two of three linebackers. The defensive end position should be very strong with
Chandler Jones, Mikhail Marinovich and Brandon
Sharpe. Safety Phillip Thomas will lead the secondary.
He was third on the Orange with 92 tackles last year. The Orange open their season Sept. 1 against Wake Forest. Bet on NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
