The month of January had to be the best in Stanford football history. On Jan. 3, the Cardinal crushed
Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl for Stanford’s first bowl win in 14 years in
their first-ever BCS bowl. The Cardinal ended the season 12-1, a school record
for wins, and finished ranked in the Top 5 for the first time since the unbeaten
1940 team finished No. 2. A few days later, quarterback Andrew
Luck, who finished second in the Heisman voting last year, shocked many
by passing up the NFL draft. Thus now Stanford has even higher expectations than
last year, like a national championship. The Cardinal are 20/1 to win the BCS
Championship Game, 3/1 to win the Pac-12 title and 7/4 to win the North Division
on Bodog’s NCAA football odds. The only bad news in this offseason came when head coach Jim Harbaugh
left to take the 49ers job. To keep continuity in place, the Cardinal
hired offensive coordinator David Shaw to replace Harbaugh. But
this team is all about Luck, who would have been a lock No. 1 overall pick in
the 2011 NFL draft after passing for 3,338 yards and 32 touchdowns with just
eight interceptions last year. He is also the Heisman betting favorite at Bodog.
Stanford is in good shape at running back. Stepfan Taylor is
back after rushing for 1,137 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. His 28 catches
are the most of any returning player. Of concern is Stanford said goodbye its
two top two receivers and three starters, including All-America center
Chase Beeler, from an offensive line that had given up just 13
sacks over the last two seasons. On defense, six starters return. However, defensive coordinator Vic
Fangio followed Harbaugh to the NFL. Fangio transformed a porous unit
that was eighth in the Pac-10 in points allowed per game (26.5) in 2009 into one
that was 10th in the nation (17.4) last year. Stanford has likely all-conference
players in linebacker Shayne Skov, who led the team in tackles
(84), tied for the lead in sacks (7.5) and was second in tackles for loss
(10.5), and strong safety Delano Howell, who led the team with
five interceptions. He also posted 60 tackles to rank fourth on the club. Stanford opens its season Sept. 3 vs. San Jose State. The Cardinal’s
over/under win total on Bodog is 8.5. Bet on 2011 NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
