Last year was the greatest season in Oregon football history as the Ducks won the Pac-10 for the second year in a row and played in their first BCS National Championship Game. The season ended on a downer, as an Oregon rally against Auburn fell short when the Tigers won the game on a kick on the game’s final play. Now the Ducks are ready to take the next step and win it all. Oregon is 14/1 to win the national title this season, 2/1 to win the new Pac-12 (favored) and 5/4 to win the North Division on Bodog’s NCAA football odds.

The Oregon quick-strike offense was the best in the nation last season by a wide margin, although it was held mostly in check by Auburn. This season, the Ducks actually want to play faster and they have two Heisman Trophy candidates in QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James. As a first-year starter last season, Thomas completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 2,881 yards and 30 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He also ran for 485 yards and five scores. James rushed for a national best 1,731 yards (5.9 yards per carry) on the ground and 24 total touchdowns to finish third in the Heisman voting. Oregon must replace three veteran offensive linemen and must also develop receiving threats to replace departed wideout Jeff Maehl.

The defense suffered some significant losses from last year in six starters, including the team leaders in tackles and sacks. There are plenty of playmakers back in the secondary, led by junior cornerback Cliff Harris, who led the Pac-10 with six interceptions (one touchdown return) and 17 pass breakups last season. However, he is suspended for at least the Ducks’ opener for an off-the-field issue.

Oregon opens the season Sept. 3 in the best game of the early season vs. fellow Top-5 team LSU. The Ducks’ over/under win total on Bodog is 9.5
