It’s not too often that a team can waltz into a new conference and be the
preseason favorites in their first year, but that’s the case with Nebraska as it
begins play in the Big Ten this season. Off a 10-win season in its final Big 12
year in 2010, the Huskers are the 7/4 favorites on Bodog’s NCAA football odds to win the first-ever Big Ten Championship Game, staged
this year in Indianapolis. It would certainly appear that the Legends Division is there for the taking. The schools other than Nebraska (1/2 on Bodog to win it) in that division are Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Northwestern and Minnesota. The last time one of those teams played in the Rose Bowl was at the end of the 2006 season, when Michigan lost to USC. The Spartans, however, were co-Big Ten champions last year. The Huskers bring back six starters on offense, led by QB and Heisman Trophy candidate Taylor Martinez.
He was brilliant to start last season but then injuries and inconsistencies slowed him down a bit. He still finished with 965 rushing yards and 1,631 passing yards. Martinez scored 12 rushing touchdowns and 10 more through the air. The Huskers may throw more this year under new offensive coordinator Tim Beck but there will still be plenty of running, with versatile I-back Rex Burkhead (951 yards in '10) taking on a featured role. Nebraska was just 113th in the nation last year
in passing. Brandon Kinnie is the team's top returning receiver. He caught 44 passes for 494 yards and five touchdowns in 2010. Three starters have to be replaced on the line. The defense was one of the best in the nation in 2010, as the Huskers ranked
third nationally in pass efficiency defense, fifth in pass defense, ninth in
scoring defense and 11th in total defense. And despite losing All-American
cornerback Prince Amukamara and three other starters, it could
be better in 2011. Nebraska has potential stars everywhere, with a stacked line
led by veteran tackles Jared Crick and Baker
Steinkuhler, record-breaking tackler Lavonte David at
linebacker and shutdown cornerback Alfonzo Denard
leading the secondary. Nebraska opens the season Sept. 3 vs. Chattanooga. The Huskers’ over/under
win total at Bodog is 10. Bet on NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
