The Miami Hurricanes were one of the biggest disappointments in college football last season. UM was the preseason favorite in the ACC and dark horse national title contender. But Miami was way too inconsistent at quarterback and was embarrassed in the final two games of the season, losing at home in front of a mostly empty stadium to unranked South Florida and then getting dominated in the Sun Bowl by Notre Dame.

That 7-6 finish led to the firing of head coach Randy Shannon and the hiring of former Temple coach Al Golden. The 41-year-old Golden spent five seasons at Temple, transforming the Owls from a program that was 1-11 in his first season to winning 17 games in his final two seasons. Can he restore the swagger at UM? The Canes are 9/2 on Bodog’s college football odds to win the ACC title for the first time and 19/10 to win the Coastal Division.

The biggest question at fall camp  is easily at quarterback. Golden expects to name a starter in about two weeks between Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris. Last year, Harris threw for 1,793 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he also threw 15 interceptions, and he's thrown 50 interceptions in his career so far. Morris stepped in last season after Harris was banged up and threw for 1,240 yards and seven touchdowns … but he also had nine interceptions as Miami led the nation in interceptions thrown. Harris and Morris are in a dead heat into fall camp. The team lost leading rusher Damien Berry and leading receiver Leonard Hankerson but has plenty of talent back at both positions led by Lamar Miller at RB and Travis Benjamin at WR. The offensive line is expecting four starters back. Overall six starters are back on offense.

On defense, seven starters are expected to return. UM will dearly miss DE Allen Bailey, LB Colin McCarthy and CB Brandon Harris. The line should have good depth and could be very strong again if Marcus Forston can finally live up to expectations and stay healthy. Linebacker Sean Spence should be UM’s best defensive player and Ray-Ray Armstrong is set to be the latest in the line of great Miami safeties. Another big loss will be Matt Bosher, who handled both the place-kicking and punting last year.

Miami has an over/under win total of 8 on Bodog’s NCAA futures. The Canes open the season Labor Day night vs. Maryland.
