Someone has to finish last in the 10-team Big 12 this season, and most people
think that club will be the Kansas Jayhawks. KU was the worst team in the conference last
year, going 3-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play. Eight of their nine losses
in 2010 were by double digits and five were by more than 20 points. The Jayhawks
are the longest shots on Bodog’s NCAA football odds to win the Big 12 in 2011 at
150/1. When you rank 111th in points scored and 103rd in points against as KU did last season, well, there’s nowhere to go but up in coach Turner Gill’s second season. On offense, eight starters are expected back but the big question is at quarterback. Freshman Brock Berglund, who originally committed to Colorado, will compete with Jordan Webb for the starting job. The focus of the offense will no doubt be sophomore running back James Sims,
who led the team with 742 rushing yards and nine TDs last season. On defense, six starters are expected back. The Jayhawks have to learn under
a new coordinator because Carl Torbush left the team over the
summer to fight prostate cancer. The Jayhawks promoted Vic Shealy
to replace him. The star of the defense will be junior defensive end
Toben Opurum, who was a running back as recently as 2009. He
was moved to end in the middle of last season and immediately became the
defense's most disruptive player, registering 21 tackles, including three for
loss, and a sack, most of which came in the second half of the year. Get your 10% Welcome Bonus at BoDog!
