The Iowa State program took a bit of a step back in 2010, going
5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Big 12. But the club wasn’t far from a bowl game: The
Cyclones played one of the tougher schedules in the country — Iowa State
opponents won 89 games, and eight of the 12 concluded their season in a bowl
game. ISU could have won games it lost to Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas State.
Can this club shock everyone and compete for the conference title this season?
ISU is 100/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football odds. The offense welcomes back five starters but lost three-year starting QB
Austen Arnaud, who finished his run as the second-leading
passer in program history. In fall camp, juniors Jerome Tiller
and Steele Jantz, a transfer from City College of San
Francisco, will battle it out for the No. 1 job. Tiller was listed No. 1 on the
depth chart both pre- and post-spring camp. ISU also lost a three-year starting
running back in Alexander Robinson, who finished with 3,309
career yards, fourth-most in school history. The main to replace him will be
sophomore Shontrelle Johnson, who showed signs of stardom in
limited duty last year. The receiving corps is largely unproven, though veterans
like Darius Darks, Darius Reynolds and Josh Lenz
have shown flashes over the last few years. On defense, seven starters are expected back. That unit was awful in rushing
the passer last year with just 11 sacks, which ranked last in the Big 12 and
116th of 120 FBS teams. The strength of the defense will be at linebacker with
juniors Jake Knott and A.J. Klein. Knott was a
second-team All-Big 12 selection after finishing second in the league with 130
tackles. He also had a team-high four interceptions, four forced fumbles, a sack
and a fumble recovery. Klein racked up 111 tackles, eight stops for loss and
three interceptions. Get your 10% Welcome Bonus at BoDog!
