A year after winning their first ACC football title and reaching the Orange
Bowl, Paul Johnson’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets regressed in a
big way last season in finishing 6-7 and losing to Air Force in the minor
Independence Bowl. Can Johnson get the Jackets back into ACC contention this year? They
opened at 40/1 on Bodog’s NCAA football futures odds to win the conference and
15/1 to win the Coastal Division. Last year was Georgia Tech’s first losing record in 15 years and Johnson's first losing season since his first year at Navy back in 2002. And while Tech did reach its 14th consecutive bowl, it lost in one for the sixth year in a row. And now Johnson has to replace offensive stars Josh Nesbitt and Anthony Allen. Junior Tevin Washington is likely the guy to replace Nesbitt at QB. He got four starts after Nesbitt's injury and he ran for 514 yards and
passed for 417, hitting 41 percent — actually a better percentage than Nesbitt — as Tech had one of the nation’s worst passing attacks. Preston Lyons likely will replace Allen as the featured back in the triple option and try to keep the streak alive of Georgia Tech being the only team to boast a 1,300-yard rusher the last five years. Overall six starters are expected back on offense. On defense, five starters are expected to return. The line is the most
experienced unit on defense, with all three starters back, though it wasn’t very
good last year. The entire unit combined for only four sacks and 12 tackles for
a loss in 2010 in Al Groh’s 3-4 scheme. All four starters — a
total of 109 career starts — are gone in the secondary. Georgia Tech’s over/under on Bodog for wins this season is 6. Bet on 2011 NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
