Thanks to Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer, the
Florida Gators were the kings of the SEC’s East Division since 2006. But that all changed last year
in the first season post-Tebow as the Gators slid to just 8-5 overall and 4-4 in
the SEC, finishing second to South Carolina. And now Meyer is gone, having
retired to a television booth and replaced by former Texas defensive coordinator
Will Muschamp. Can Muschamp, in his first season as a head
coach, lead Florida back to the SEC Championship Game? UF is 9/5 to win the SEC
East (slight favorite) and 9/2 to win the conference title (second to Alabama)
on Bodog's NCAA football odds. John Brantley was supposed to be the guy to replace Tebow at
QB, but Brantley struggled big time last year as UF eventually went to a
rotation at quarterback. Brantley ranked 10th in the 12-team SEC in passing
efficiency, completing 60.8 percent of his passes for 2,061 yards, nine
touchdowns and 10 interceptions. But he is the guy heading into this season as
the Gators hope new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and his
pro-style offense will fix Brantley (it didn’t work in the spring). UF might
have the fastest 1-2 punch at running back in the country in Jeff Demps
and Chris Rainey; look for the latter to be used
Percy Harvin-style. There is plenty of potential at receiver
but not much experience. Senior Deonte Thompson led the Gators
with 38 catches for 570 yards last season. UF has to replace four starters on
the line. The defense brings back just four starters but should be good under
Muschamp’s watch as Texas’ always was. The biggest loss on this side likely was
All-SEC cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who turned down a chance at
the NFL but was then dismissed from the team in late April. Linebacker
Jelani Jenkins, the team’s leading returning tackler, likely
will be the key to the defense, because he’s got the talent to be an
All-American. Florida opens the season Sept. 3 vs. Florida Atlantic. The Gators’ over/under
win total at Bodog is 8. Bet on 2011 NCAA football futures now at Bodog!
