The 2011 season was the best in school history at Connecticut as the Huskies won their first Big East title and played in their first BCS Bowl – but got throttled by Oklahoma. The offseason hasn’t been good to Connecticut. Head coach Randy Edsall, who spent 12 years building the program from scratch, left to take the Maryland job. And star running back Jordan Todman, the nation’s second-leading rusher, left early for the NFL. Can the Huskies repeat as Big East champions? They are the longest shots on Bodog’s college football futures odds at 22/1.

It could be a rebuilding season under new coach Paul Pasqualoni. He led Syracuse to 107 victories and four conference titles in 14 years before being fired in 2004 and spending the past six years as an NFL assistant. At QB, Michael Box is the front-runner for the job among a group of four. He appeared in five games last year and started one, against Louisville, and completed 4-of-12 passes for 35 yards before leaving with a head injury. He’s the only QB on the roster with experience. D.J. Shoemate likely will be the main guy to fill Todman’s shoes. He rushed for 115 yards on 28 carries in 13 games as a reserve last year. The Huskies do return the bulk of their offensive line and receivers.

The defense brings back nine starters. All four starters on the defensive line return, led by Kendall Reyes, an All-Big East pick who almost went to the NFL himself. End Jesse Joseph should be one of the best in the conference after leading the team with 12 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in 2010. The only linebacker to return is a good one in Sio Moore, who finished second in tackles with 110 along with a team-high 11.5 sacks and one interception. All four starters are also back in the secondary.

UConn opens the season Sept. 1 against Fordham.
